Abdul Abdullah PAINTING Workshop
First presented at the annual conference VADEA Peripheral Visions 2021 event held in May, this highly popular event recording is provided to VADEA members with the permission of the artist but is only available for the upcoming holiday period so members can undertake the workshop themselves at their own pace.
Abdul Abdullah is an Australian multi-disciplinary artist. As a self-described ‘outsider amongst outsiders’ with a post 9/11 mindset, his practice is primarily concerned with the experience of the ‘other’. Abdullah’s projects have engaged with different marginalized minority groups and he is particularly interested in the disjuncture between perception/projection of identity and the reality of lived experience. Identifying as a Muslim and having both Malay/Indonesian and convict/settler Australian heritage, Abdullah occupies a precarious space in the political discourse that puts him at odds with popular definitions. He sees himself as an artist working in the peripheries of a peripheral city, in a peripheral country, orbiting a world on the brink. His work has been censored by politicians who have accused him of attacking Australian culture, and once a member of the Christian Democratic party wrote that Abdullah wants to “convert young Australians” and that he “worships a moon god”. The artists website is available here and there is an incredible stage 6 artist Education Resource written by VADEA available here (VADEA Members Access).
This workshop showcases Abdul’s portrait practice and reflects his school-based artist in residency process. Abdul explains his own practice and invites participants to explore a variety of acrylic painting techniques. Starting with an outline of ‘drawing and painting’. Abdul goes into facial proportions, colour mixing and tonal swatches for the face.
Please click here for the list of materials you will need for the workshop and you will want these materials to be set up for use prior to the event.
Not sure you have them all – within the materials list is a discounted art pack from Eckersley’s that provides many of the materials suggested for the workshop but you must order these directly with them – see materials list for details. A big thanks to Eckersley’s for their support of this workshop.
The recording is available to VADEA members for viewing.
