HIDDEN Rookwood Schools 2023 invited teachers from primary and secondary schools across NSW to propose class projects and group works, which respond to the context of Rookwood in some way, such as the cemetery’s contemporary relevance, diverse cultural practices, historical significance, celebration of life, personal stories, or evocative sense of place. And/or engage with one or more of the HIDDEN themes: contemplation, history, culture, remembrance, diversity, love, loss, mourning, spirituality, relationships, memory, community, cycles of life and the passage of time.
The HIDDEN Schools works are exhibited alongside contemporary artworks by midcareer, established and emerging artists; and the traditional, finely honed, hand-carving skills of living stonemasons in the HIDDEN Stonemasons section.
HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures is an annual outdoor sculpture exhibition, running since 2009. It takes place amongst the pathways and gardens in one of the oldest sections of Rookwood Cemetery, on Dharug Land. Rookwood Cemetery is the largest and most multicultural cemetery in Australia: rich in heritage, traditions, and layered narratives.
