Hazelhurst Teacher Professional Development Day

VADEA invites our members to participate in a day of professional learning at Hazelhurst Arts Centre, featuring workshops with acclaimed artists Christopher Nielsen and Zuza Zochowski.

The day will begin with artist talks by both guest artists, followed by the opportunity to engage in one of their hands-on workshops. Attendees will also enjoy lunch with the artists, the Hazelhurst team, and VADEA representatives. In the afternoon, participants will take part in a guided tour of the ARTEXPRESS exhibition before concluding the day with the second workshop session.

Workshop 1: Digital Design & Storytelling with Christopher Nielsen

Christopher Nielsen is an award-winning Australian author/illustrator specializing in bringing joy and wonder to children through his art and storytelling. His illustration is inspired by a deep passion for mid-century culture and design. Christopher’s first picture book was shortlisted for the CBCA Crichton award for best new illustrator in 2018. Since then, he has continued to create award winning picture books, middle grade, YA and non-fiction. His clients include Disney/Pixar, Walker Books, Little Hare Publishing, Allen & Unwin, Harper Collins, Penguin Random House and Taronga Zoo.
Chris will lead teachers through the process of developing stories in a digital medium, advising accessible applications, techniques for story boarding and character development. Devices will be provided for teacher use in the workshop.

Workshop 2: Observational Painting & Creative Journaling with Zuza Zochowski

Zuza Zochowski is an artist interested in discovering treasures in the everyday. A Wollongong based artist working mainly with paint as her medium. Her work explores methods in personally translating her visual experience as an image. Zuza works from life or plein air with her immediate surroundings as her subject. Her works are personal observations of her subjects quickly depicted using colours, shapes, texture and tone. Sketches are made for further investigation in the studio or works are made as an immediate response to the moment at hand.
Zuza will lead teachers through varied techniques to work through ideas towards resolution, tips on how to break apart creative blocks and ways to embrace journaling as part of the artistic practice.
